A woman in Kerala's Kollam was arrested after a viral video showed her beating up an elderly woman. The old woman was being hit allegedly by her daughter-in-law.
The elderly woman fell to the ground after being pushed by the accused woman, the widely shared clip showed. Taking cognisance of the video, the Kerala Police initiated action and the accused woman was arrested.
"Old woman beaten up in Kollam. Accused arrested," the Kerala Police said in a tweet in Malayalam.
The video was widely circulated by social media users, including activist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj, who sought action against the accused.
"Abuse of the elderly is increasing so much in society. Such treatment is sick to say the least. This woman should be arrested if she hasn't already been. What's really disturbing is how she's training even the child to abuse the old lady," she said in a tweet.
The video also showed children standing nearby, looking at the old woman being hit.
