Jyotiraditya Scindia returns to familiar territory with Communication Ministry

8 months ago 22

Jyotiraditya Scindia, who was Minister of Civil Aviation in the previous NDA government, has now been given charge of the Ministry of Communications. Scindia is no stranger to this department as he held charge as Minister of State for Communication under the UPA 1 government.

Jyotiraditya Scindia won his traditional Guna Lok Sabha seat in Madhya Pradesh with a margin of over five lakh votes, defeating Congress's Yadvendra Rao Deshraj Singh. Scindia, a former Congress leader, had contested on a BJP ticket for the first time.

His inclusion in the Modi 3.0 Cabinet and the portfolios assigned to him highlights his importance in the BJP setup.

Scindia, who is the grandson of Jiwajirao Scindia, the last Maharaja of the princely state of Gwalior, had formally joined the Congress in 2001 after the death of his father, Madhavrao Scindia.

Jyotiraditya Scindia was the Union Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology between 2007 and 2009 during UPA I. He also served as Minister of State for Communications, Commerce and Industry, and Power under the previous UPA regime.

Scindia parted ways with the Congress in 2020 and joined the BJP. Scindia, who had lost in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, was elected a BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh in 2020. A year later, he was appointed as the Minister of Civil Aviation in NDA 2.0 after a cabinet reshuffle.

The Guna MP was included in the Union Cabinet in the Modi 3.0 as well and has been given charge of the Ministry of Communications along with the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
