NEW DELHI: Commonwealth Games silver medallist
Tulika Maan
on Tuesday has earned a spot for India at the
Paris Olympics
, as confirmed by the International
Judo
Federation (IJF) on Tuesday.
Maan's name was included in the list of qualified athletes published by the IJF, securing her place in the +78 kg category.
The Commonwealth Games silver medallist accumulated 1345 points, placing her at the 36th position in the rankings.
The qualification period for the Paris Games spanned from June 22, 2022, to June 23, 2024.
"The next step will take place on July 2 when the NOCs (National Olympic Committees) will have to nominate which athletes will represent them, knowing that only one judoka per NOC can participate in the Games in each weight category," the IJF said on its website.
"In other words, if a country has several judoka qualified in a given weight category, only one can be chosen to participate this summer."
India's sole representative in Judo at the
Tokyo Olympics
, Sushila Devi Likmabam, faced an early exit in the women's 48kg category after losing in the first round.
The host nation, France, is granted automatic entry in all 14 individual weight classes, with a maximum of seven judokas each for men and women.
Additionally, the Tripartite Commission allocates 15 universality quotas to eligible National Olympic Committees (NOCs).
All other judokas must navigate a qualification process to earn a spot in their respective weight categories for the Olympic Games. This is determined by their position on the International Judo Federation's (IJF) world ranking list.
A country can enter a maximum of 14 judokas, seven each for both men and women per bodyweight category.
