SUNSET PARK, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- A neighborhood pizza place helps make a block feel like home. A slice can soothe the soul.

But there was some sadness this week at Johnny's Pizza on Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

The family-run business has been on the block between 58th and 59th Streets for 56 years.

The Miniaci family announced their retirement effective Jan. 24. Customers, friends and neighbors lined up on the sidewalk.

They took orders for the last pizza meal on Wednesday evening. The slices sold out after lunch.

It's proof of the power of pizza.

Everyone said the sense of family and good food helped create the atmosphere.

John Miniaci, Sr. and his wife Lilia opened the shop in 1986.

Their children and family members have run operations and made pizza for decades. They were there for the final pie.

They plan to take some time off and hint that neighbors may not have seen the last of them.
