NEW YORK (PIX11) --- Jessica Tisch will be only the second woman to be NYPD commissioner when she takes over the department next week, according to Mayor Eric Adams.
The current Department of Sanitation commissioner, who was with the NYPD for 12 years, will replace Interim NYPD Commissioner Tom Donlon, who agreed to temporarily fill in after Edward Caban stepped down amid federal investigations.
Tisch will start her new post on Monday. She is the second woman to be the city's top cop. Forner commissioner Keechant Sewell was the first.
"I'm looking forward to coming home. There is a reason you're called the finest," Tisch said.
Tisch was a counterterrorism analyst with the NYPD before rising through the ranks and eventually overseeing the NYPD's 911 operations. She also managed how the NYPD's body-worn cameras were used.
In her new role, she said her priorities will be to keep cops safe and to bring the department into the next century with new training and technology.
"I will always honor that work," Tisch said of the officers' scarifies and efforts to keep the city safe.
She was appointed DSNY commissioner in April 2022 and is behind the “Trash Revolution,” mandating that 70% of the city's garbage be placed in containers to control the rat problem.
Adams also announced that an additional 1,600 officers will patrol city streets by October 2025, bringing the total to about 34,000 cops in the department.
In the past few days, four people were stabbed to death and an NYPD cop was shot in the line of duty in Queens.
Ramon Rivera, 51, is accused of killing three people in a series of unprovoked attacks in Manhattan on Monday.
Gary Worthy, 57, who shot the cop in the leg, was wanted for committing two armed robberies within an hour Tuesday. Worthy was killed in the shootout with police.
