Is TikTok back? Users report app is working again

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- TikTok is "in the process of restoring service" after going dark Saturday evening, the company announced Sunday.

In a statement to a TikTok X account, representatives said the app is "in the process of restoring service" after President-elect Donald Trump assured providers they "will face no penalties providing TikTok."

Trump says he will issue an executive order Monday to get TikTok back up

"We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that keeps TikTok in the United States," read the statement to TikTok's X account.

Trump said he planned to issue an executive order to give TikTok’s China-based parent company more time to find an approved buyer before the popular video-sharing platform is subject to a permanent U.S. ban.

On Saturday evening, a message appeared on the app that read "Sorry, TikTok isn't available right now," citing a law banning TikTok. As of Sunday afternoon, the app was accessible again for some users.

It was not immediately clear whether TikTok was working as it did before the company instituted a blackout late Saturday. However, the app remained unavailable for download on Apple’s app store.

As of Sunday afternoon, Apple's app store still featured a message saying TikTok is no longer available in the United States, and that visitors could have limited access.

"Apple is obligated to follow the laws in the jurisdictions where it operates," reads the statement on the app store.

Google and Apple removed the app from their digital stores to comply with a federal law that required them to do so if TikTok parent company ByteDance didn’t sell its U.S. operation by Sunday. The law, which passed with wide bipartisan support in April, allowed for steep fines for non-compliance.

On Sunday, New Yorkers had planned to memorialize the beloved social media app at Washington Square Park. Fliers posted in the city publicized a celebration of life for the app starting at 2 p.m.
