IRS gives final warning to claim 2020 tax refunds

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The IRS is sending the public a final reminder to claim refunds for the 2020 tax year.

At least 1 million taxpayers haven't filed returns for that year, according to the agency.

It has amounted to roughly $1 billion in unclaimed refunds. New Yorkers account for almost $61 million of those funds, according to the IRS.

The IRS notes there is no penalty for failing to file as long as the filer doesn't owe money.

The average median refund for the 2020 tax year is $932. The deadline to claim the refunds is May 17.
