IPL matches in Dharamsala to be played on newly-laid 'hybrid pitch'

NEW DELHI: The picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium in

Dharamsala

has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first BCCI-accredited venue to install a state-of-the-art '

hybrid pitch

' to host two Indian Premier League matches this season.
This innovative pitch technology integrates natural turf with reinforced synthetic fibers, offering enhanced durability and consistency.

The installation of the hybrid pitch aims to elevate the quality of cricketing surfaces and ensure optimal playing conditions for matches hosted at the stadium.
The decision to implement this advanced pitch system underscores HPCA's commitment to innovation and excellence in cricket infrastructure. By embracing hybrid pitch technology, the stadium seeks to maintain its reputation as a premier cricketing venue while providing players and spectators with a world-class experience.
"The hybrid track has been installed and the two IPL games will be played on newly installed surface," a HPCA official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The Netherlands-based '

SISGrass

', a part of the SIS Pitches group of companies, has been roped in for the first-ever hybrid pitch installation.
According to a press release, "this cutting-edge technology will transform the game by providing a more durable, consistent, and high-performing playing surface."
HPCA president RP Singh said, “The arrival of ground-breaking hybrid pitch technology in India signifies a game-changing moment for our national cricket."

, a former England cricketer and SIS's international cricket director said, “As we inject new and improved technological advancements into India's vibrant cricket ecosystem, we foresee a catalytic effect on its growth trajectory."
"At SISGrass, and working with fine turf specialists Greater Ten, our delivery partner in India, we are committed to investing in this ecosystem by providing top-notch facilities such as hybrid pitches," he added.
SIS made its entry into the Indian market following the ICC's decision to permit the use of hybrid surfaces for T20 and 50-over competitions. Building on the success of installing hybrid pitches across cricket grounds in England, SIS recognised the opportunity to develop this technology in India.
The hybrid surface consists of a blend of natural turf and a small percentage of polymer fiber within cricket stadiums. This composition offers increased resilience to the stresses of play, extends the lifespan of the pitch, ensures an even bounce, and reduces the workload for ground staff.
Despite the inclusion of polymer fiber, the completed installations remain predominantly natural grass, with only five percent of the surface comprising synthetic material. This approach maintains the characteristics of a traditional all-natural pitch.
The 'Universal' machine, utilised in Dharamshala for the hybrid pitch, will be transported to Ahmedabad and Mumbai for further installations. It will continue to be stationed in India for upcoming projects.
In the UK, hybrid pitches are approved for T20 and 50-over competitions and will also feature in the four-day County Championship matches this season. The 'Universal' machine has been instrumental in installing SISGrass at renowned grounds in England, including Lord's, The Oval, Edgbaston, Old Trafford, and Trent Bridge.
It's worth noting that the pitch and outfield at Dharamsala came under scrutiny during the ODI World Cup last year, leading to a complete refurbishment of the playing surface.
