Former Pakistan captain Inzamam Ul Haq has urged the Indian team to visit the rival country for Champions Trophy in 2025. Inzamam said that the Indian team will be well taken care of in Pakistan in case they visit in 2025.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) made it clear to the International Cricket Council (ICC) that they were not travelling to Pakistan. On Sunday, November 10, the BCCI gave the statement in writing to the ICC, which the apex board then forwarded to Pakistan.
“The PCB has received an email from the ICC, stating that the BCCI has informed them that their team will not travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The PCB has forwarded that email to the Government of Pakistan for their advice and guidance,” a PCB spokesperson said.
Inzamam was disappointed after reading about the developments and said that India were depriving the crowd of joy.
“They are depriving cricket of such a big occasion. There is no threat to the Indian team in Pakistan. In fact, they would get the best hospitality here,” PTI quoted Inzamam as saying.
India has not sent its cricket team to Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup. However, Pakistan has travelled to India for a bilateral white-ball series in 2012-13, the T20 World Cup in 2016 and last year for the 50-over World Cup.
Former Test batsman Mohsin Khan said politics should never be mixed with sports.
“I mean does the Indian government really believe there is any threat to their team in Pakistan? But I would advise on remaining calm before making any decision,” he noted.
Champions Trophy, which returns after a break of 8 years will host the top 8 teams in the international circuit. The right to host the tournament is with Pakistan in 2025 and PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi has stressed time and again that if India wants to play Pakistan, they have to travel to the rival nation.
With ICC sending an official communication to the PCB it needs to be seen what the board and the apex body decide on the scheduling. Pakistan, who had the rights to the 2023 Asia Cup, hosted the tournament in a hybrid model where India played their games in Sri Lanka.
