EAST FLATBUSH, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- An innocent bystander was shot during a police-involved shooting in Brooklyn Monday.

Henry, 60, spoke to PIX11 News from his bed at a hospital where he’s recovering from a "through and through" gunshot wound to his torso and a shot to the arm.

"I was shot in the side of my abdomen, in the muscle," said Henry, who underwent surgery to remove a bullet from his arm.

The shooting happened Monday evening, across the street from the outdoor mechanic shop Henry runs just off Remsen Avenue in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.

An unidentified 20-year-old man was shooting at a couple as he chased them down the street, according to the NYPD.

Sources told PIX11 News detectives are investigating whether moments earlier the same couple tried to mug the 20-year-old, who police confirmed does not have a criminal record.

The couple got away unharmed as responding police officers – who were already in the area – pulled up in a gray sedan.

The officers fired multiple shots at the 20-year-old, killing him across the street from Henry’s outdoor mechanic shop and right in front of Nate Nerenberg’s home. Nerenberg’s doorbell video recorded the incident.

"I first made sure my kids were not near the window because, you know, gunshot, you don't want any ricochet. It could have been a lot worse if the cops wouldn't have come right away because the guy was just shooting random people at 6 p.m. – people are out, cars are out. A lot of people could have gotten shot randomly. So if it wasn't for them, it could have been a lot worse," said Nerenberg.

In the aftermath of the shooting, news spread quickly among his friends and neighbors about Henry’s injuries.

"Surreal, surreal. Great man. Love him like an uncle. [He] serves the community, fixes cars, helps everybody -- rain, snow, sleet," said "G," a friend of Henry's.

It is still unclear if Henry was hit by a stray bullet fired by the 20-year-old or one of the officers. PIX11 News asked him for his thoughts on how the police responded.

"Oh my God, it was really a good job. I feel the pain, but at least they got him down because that guy could be more dangerous. I don't know what's going on. It's like every guy now drives with guns," said Henry.

Police revealed Tuesday that they also took a 19-year-old man into custody. Criminal charges are pending for an unrelated robbery, sources told PIX11 News.
