LONG ISLAND (PIX11) – An American bald eagle was rescued from a busy Long Island highway on Thursday evening by Strong Island Animal Rescue.
The national bird was believed to be looking for food when he was clipped by a truck on Route 112 in Medford, New York, according to Strong Island Animal Rescue.
“Liberty was probably flying for food when he was hit,” said a volunteer. “He has damage to his right eye and cannot see out of it. We want to get him to a specialist as soon as possible.”
After a night of rest at the shelter, "Liberty" was doing better, the animal rescue team said. The 8-year-old bird was alert and standing, according to longtime animal rescuer Frankie Floridia.
“Our main goal is to get him back to the wild as soon as we can,” Floridia said.
Floridia has been rescuing animals for more than 20 years and was the volunteer who quickly responded to swoop in and save the majestic creature. Floridia was able to get a towel over the bird and get him to safety.
