INDORE
: A masked gunman wearing a raincoat barged into a public sector bank in Scheme No. 54, fired a shot at the female cashier, shattering the plexiglass, and made off with over Rs 6.6 lakh on Tuesday afternoon.
The robber seems to have recced the bank and his getaway route as the robbery took less than four minutes and he used narrow lanes and bylanes to speed away on a motorcycle.
The brazen dacoity has shocked the city, more so since the bank is in a busy street in a residential area.
"The robber drove to Punjab National Bank on a two-wheeler at 4:35pm when it was officially closed for work. He went in, fired a shot at the counter, breaking the glass, and demanded cash," said DCP Abhinay Vishwakarma.
He aimed a .315 bore rifle at the female cashier, handed her a black bag and told her to put the money in it, said police. The cashier did as she was told. The gunman walked outside with the bag, jumped on his bike and sped off. "Another biker was seen waiting outside and keeping a watch. He too fled the spot," said the DCP. A 22-year-old coconut vendor, Shivam Saule, who operates a shop right outside the bank, told TOI, "We suddenly heard a loud bang. A couple of minutes later, a man walked out of the bank, sat on a bike and drove off. I saw a bank employee and a customer run after him but he escaped."
