Fiji's Deputy Prime Minister, Biman Prasad, became the first foreign leader to visit the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
Prasad led a delegation that represented the Indian diaspora in Fiji. They arrived at Maharshi Valmiki Airport in Ayodhya on Thursday and visited the Ram temple.
The 'pran pratishtha' ceremony of the Balak Ram idol in the temple was held on January 22. Prime MInister Narendra Modi was the main yajman.
Deputy PM Prasad interacted with the media and highlighted the profound connection of Fijian citizens of Indian origin with their roots.
Indians were taken to Fiji during British colonial rule, and they carried with them the teachings of the 'Bhagavad Gita' and the 'Ramayana', said Prasad. This leads to a strong cultural identity for the community.
Deputy Prime Minister Prasad expressed enthusiasm about the fervour among Fijians regarding Ayodhya, especially during the recent 'pran pratishtha' ceremony.
Despite having people from diverse religious backgrounds, Diwali is celebrated grandly in Fiji and there is a nationwide public holiday on that day.
Regarding his visit to Ayodhya, Deputy Prime Minister Prasad considered it a privilege to witness the esteemed deity of Lord Ram. He noted that the visit would strengthen ties between India and Fiji.
Prasad mentioned that Fijians of Indian origin have a special affinity towards Ayodhya as they mostly hail from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The Fijian Deputy Prime Minister also said how it was important for everyone to follow the principles of Lord Ram. "It brings a unique joy and fulfilment to one's life," he said.
The Deputy Prime Minister of Fiji arrived in New Delhi late on Sunday night, commencing his week-long visit to India.
Prasad will be in India till February 10.
