Indian warship INS Sumitra rescued 19 Pakistani sailors from Somali Pirates who hijacked their fishing vessel on Monday. This was the second anti-piracy operation carried out by the warship within 36 hours. On Sunday night, it responded to a similar SOS call from another fishing vessel that was captured by pirates.
Iranian-flagged fishing vessel Al Naeemi was boarded by armed pirates on Monday. The intruders took the 19 crew members, all Pakistanis, hostage.
"Responding swiftly to the developing situation Sumitra intercepted the FV (fishing vessel) on PM 29 Jan 24 and through coercive posturing and effective deployment of her integral helo and boats compelled the safe release of the crew and the vessel. The ship also undertook confirmatory boarding to sanitise and also to check on the well-being of the crew who were held captive by the Somali pirates," the Navy said in a statement
