NEW DELHI: Australia legend
Ricky Ponting
has showered accolades on Indian spin maestro
Ravichandran Ashwin
, reflecting on their time together at the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Capitals. Ponting's tribute comes as Ashwin plays his
100th Test appearance
in the fifth match of the series between India and England in Dharamsala.
In the lead-up to this milestone, Ashwin's cricketing journey stands as a testament to his exceptional skill and dedication. With 507 wickets in 99 Tests at an impressive average of 23.91, including 35 five-wicket hauls, Ashwin's illustrious career epitomizes excellence.
Ponting remarked on Ashwin's remarkable achievements, acknowledging his mastery of spin bowling across diverse conditions.
"He's a master of spin in any conditions. He's been an incredible cricketer, no doubt about it," Ponting expressed in the latest episode of the ICC Review.
Having had the privilege of coaching Ashwin during their stint at Delhi Capitals, Ponting attested to the spinner's relentless pursuit of perfection.
"I had a chance to coach him for a couple of years at Delhi and loved working with him. He's got a lot of theories and philosophies on the game, which I like. He's always done things a little bit differently and done things his way. But he just continued to evolve as a bowler," Ponting remarked.
He further emphasized Ashwin's unwavering commitment to refining his craft, noting his penchant for innovation and continuous improvement.
Throughout the ongoing series against England, Ashwin has not only breached the 500-wicket milestone but has also surpassed the legendary Anil Kumble's records for the most Test wickets taken in India and the most five-wicket hauls.
With this feat, Ashwin solidifies his place among the pantheon of cricketing greats, trailing only ICC Hall of Famers Muttiah Muralidaran,
Shane Warne
, and
Richard Hadlee
in terms of Test five-wicket hauls.
Reflecting on India's commanding position in the series, Ponting acknowledged the team's formidable performance, securing an unassailable 3-1 lead over England. Despite England's early advantage, Ponting noted their inability to capitalize on opportunities in key moments, as India displayed resilience and dominance throughout the series.
