NEW YORK (PIX11) – A new proposal may help improve pay transparency for job seekers and employees.
The proposed City Council bill would require employers to clarify how they determine the pay range for an open position. Employers who offer a salary outside of the posted range would also have to provide a written record of their reasons for doing so.
If passed, job listings would have to provide information such as opportunities for promotion or transfer along with potential for bonuses.
For those already working, the bill would require companies to disclose compensation information to current employees for open positions similar to the employee’s role.
Councilmember Selvena N. Brooks-Powers, who penned the proposal, says its part of the Council’s efforts to curb wage disparities based on age and gender.
According to the New York Department of Labor, women in New York State earned 87.5 cents for every dollar earned by men in 2022.
The gap also widened with age with women aged 25-years-old to 34-years-old making 94.9 cents for every dollar of their male counterparts in 2022. Women 65-years-old and older made 79.1 cents for every dollar a man makes.
