Immersive dance theater experience in NYC cemetery

4 months ago 9

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- It is not the usual place to see an immersive dance theater performance.

Final rehearsals are underway now for the premiere of And Then, Now at Green-Wood Cemetery the first weekend in May.

Dancer Jody Oberfelder choreographed the event.

"Attendees will uncover the diverse and storied history of Green-Wood, breathing life into forgotten narratives and honoring the art, history, and natural beauty of New York City," Oberfelder said. "I'm very much interested in what it means to be alive, and I thought, what a better place to do a piece about life than in a place where all these people have lived before."

Things to do around NYC

The audience will follow the dancers and musicians through the cemetery. The performance will end inside the catacombs.

"This particular location feels sort of sacred, so there's a respect and honor that has to be brought to the work, aside from what you would normally bring to any artistic endeavor," dancer Mariah Anton-Artes told PIX11 News.

And Then, Now will offer four performances:

Saturday, May 4 at 4 p.m.; Sunday, May 5 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; and Monday, May 6 at 6 p.m.

In the event of rain, the performance will be postponed to Wednesday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $30 and $25 for members of The Green-Wood Cemetery.
