KOLKATA: A
first-year student
of
IIT-Madras
and resident of
Sonarpur
on the outskirts of Kolkata was arrested Saturday on charges of
stabbing
and grievously wounding a family friend's neighbour, his wife and their son in retaliation for the killing of a
stray dog
, reports Monotosh Chakraborty.
Archan Bhattacharya allegedly came from Chennai to avenge the dog's death.
He has been charged under various sections, including attempt to murder. The wounded couple and their son are being treated at MR Bangur Hospital in Kolkata.
Investigators said the families of Gobindo Adhikari and Subhash Debnath, who have been neighbours in Chouhati area of Sonarpur for several years, had a disagreement over the Debnath family feeding stray dogs. The Adhikari family complained that the dogs often entered their house. The Adhikaris allegedly beat a stray dog in May, which died a few days later.
"When Smriti Debnath narrated the dog's death to her friend Archan, he came to avenge the attack and the harassment of the Debnath family," said an officer. Archan told investigators he was enraged after learning that her neighbours had beaten a dog to death, police said.
