TRICHY: A report by an expert from

IIT Madras

will be submitted to the

national highways authority of India

(NHAI) on Monday to initiate the preliminary

repair works

on the damaged railway overbridge on the

Chennai-Trichy National Highway

(NH).
Taking into account the traffic implications on the highway linking southern districts with central and northern Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, especially during the Pongal festival holidays, NHAI has mobilized specialized machinery at the site to launch repair works through a concessionaire.

Professor P Alagusundaramoorthy, a structural engineering faculty from the civil engineering department of IIT Madras conducted a field inspection at the bridge where a bulge was spotted. Based on the findings, NHAI has planned to launch strengthening works in the damaged portion of the bridge near Ponmalai railway station before January 16 (Tuesday).
“Experts with experience in such work will be deployed. The sand filling method is likely to be adapted to strengthen the loose soil in the bridge,” a source in NHAI said.

Special equipment, scaffolding materials, and power jacks from other work sites of NHAI were mobilised near the damaged bridge. Meanwhile, bumper-to-bumper traffic continued for the third day on the Chennai-Trichy NH passing through Trichy city.
