World No.1 Iga Swiatek is one step away from achieving the distinction of winning the French Open women’s singles title for 3 seasons in a row. On Thursday, June 6, the Pole defeated USA’s Coco Gauff 6-2, 6-3 in the semi-final at Court Philippe-Chatrier. Swiatek, who won a match this season against Anastasia Potopova in 40 minutes, took only 1 hour and 22 minutes to get the better of Gauff. She also became the first since Maria Sharapova in 2012-14 to reach the Roland Garros semis 3 years in a row.
Gauff, who became the World No.2 after Aryna Sabalenka lost to Mirra Andreeva in the quarters, looked good in patches, but failed to build enough pressure on Swiatek. In the first set, Swiatek did not give Gauff any breaking space whatsoever. Once she earned 2 breaks, she became unstoppable and closed out the opening set in 38 minutes.
In the second set, Gauff was much more competitive, but she did not have the rub of the green go her way. She earned a break, but gave away 2 of them. After saving 3 match points, Gauff finally ran out of energy.
In the final, Swiatek will lock horns with the winner of the other semi-final between Italy’s Jasmine Paolini and the 17-year-old young sensation Mirra Andreeva. In 2022, Swiatek beat Gauff in the final followed by her win over Karolina Muchova in 2023. It remains to be seen if the top-ranked player can come up trumps this time around as well.
