NEW YORK (PIX11) – As ICE raids in New York City threaten to sweep up non-violent undocumented immigrants, advocacy groups are encouraging residents to make an emergency plan.
NYC-based community groups such as the Brooklyn Defenders have compiled resources for immigrant communities in the city to educate them on the importance of having an emergency plan for their families.
Advocates say emergency plans can help prepare families in the event a person encounters or is arrested by ICE. Residents should not carry the plan with them or share it with an ICE agent.
Emergency plans should be kept in a safe place and only shared with trusted friends and relatives, immigrant advocates say.
Below is a list of information that an emergency plan should include.
Emergency plan information:
- Name
- Social Security/ITIN number (if you have one):
- Home and/or cell phone number
- Two emergency contacts including their names, phone numbers, and email addresses
- Important family phone numbers
- Childcare provider names and contact information
- Names of doctors and their contact information
- Lists of medications and dosages
- Lists of allergies and dietary requirements
- Names of doctors for children and their contact information
- Lists of medications and dosages for children in the family
- Lists of allergies and dietary requirements for children in the family
- Place of birth
- Contact for local embassy and/or consulate
- Language and translation needs
- Names of immigration lawyers and their contact information
