NEW DELHI:
England
's wicketkeeper-batter
Jonny Bairstow
has expressed uncertainty regarding his keeping responsibilities in the lead-up to England's highly anticipated five-match Test series against India, set to kick off in Hyderabad on January 25.
The 2023 Test home summer saw Bairstow taking on the primary
wicket-keeping role
for England, but the inclusion of
Ben Foakes
in the squad has added an element of competition.
Bairstow, who showcased improved wicket-keeping skills during the Ashes series, where he concluded with 23 catches and a stumping, is yet to receive clarity on his role.
In a conversation with Sky Sports, he stated, "I've not spoken to anyone about that. As long as I'm over there, as long as I'm fit and firing, the selection decisions will be taken out of my hands. But look, I'm fairly happy with where I'm at, whether I'm keeping, batting or whatever it is."
The competition for the wicketkeeper's spot has intensified with Ben Foakes' recall to the 16-member squad, setting the stage for a selection dilemma for the team management.
Reflecting on the challenges that lie ahead on Indian pitches, Bairstow emphasized England's readiness to adapt and continue playing with their ultra-attacking style. He acknowledged the diversity of pitches India can produce and stressed the need for England to swiftly adjust to the conditions.
"There's been a lot of talk around Bazball, and the probably majority of it has been from you guys (in the media). Look, it's a positive way of playing cricket. It's a way in which we're trying to entertain people that are watching. In India, we know the conditions are going to be slightly different… it'll be a case of, can we adapt quick enough and well enough to the conditions, and play suitably?"
In terms of his personal preparation, Bairstow shared insights into his post-2023 Men's ODI World Cup routine, focusing on rehabilitating his ankle, spending quality time with family, and ensuring optimal fitness for the upcoming challenges.
"I've been getting my ankle right, just training in the gym pretty hard, catching up with friends and family. Having come back from the injury that I had, it was a pretty full-on summer… it's been great to just have a bit of a refresh, have a bit of time with the family and just to make sure the ankle is as good as it can be."
