BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) --- A man tried to console his friend after accidentally shooting him outside a smoke shop in Brooklyn on Monday, police said.
The suspect allegedly shot Desmond Francis, 36, in the chest with a pistol outside of the smoke shop near Ralph and Sutter avenues in Brooklyn at around 10:20 a.m. Monday, police said. The shooter was outside the store holding two plastic bags when Francis playfully took them, but the suspect thought he was being robbed, officials said.
The gunman then opened fire before realizing he shot his friend.
"I didn't know it was you, I'm really, really sorry," the suspect allegedly said to Francis in a 911 call he made after the shooting, according to police.
The shooter stayed with the victim to console him and tried to comfort him for a few minutes before taking off with his plastic bags, detectives said.
"At some point he hears the sirens and ... leaves his friend to die," NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said.
Francis was rushed to the hospital where he died of cardiac arrest, police said.
There have been no arrests.
