NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The MTA held its first of four public hearings on congestion pricing Thursday night, and 190 people signed up to speak for and against the plan.
The speakers were pretty evenly divided for and against the proposal to charge drivers of cars $15 to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street.
Trucks will have to pay between $24 and $36, motorcycles $7.50, and there will be a $2.50 surcharge for people who use Uber and Lyft to enter the Central Business District.
"A $2.50 per trip fee is not enough to limit the impact of these vehicles. It is the height of luxury to take an Uber or Lyft," New York State Assemblyman Robert Carrol said.
"I feel like this tax is going to hurt us drivers and also hurt businesses, but if it's not managed right, it's not going to help the subway either," driver Michelle Dottin of the Independent Drivers' Guild said.
There will be a total of four public hearings.
