WILLIAMSBURG, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- Hundreds of people gathered at Whiskey Annex on Berry Street for the bar night organized by a Brooklyn couple who grew up in the Asheville area.
They were supposed to be married in North Carolina on Oct. 19th but had to postpone it due to the devastation from Helene.
As news of the devastation poured in, Molly Frye and Joel Brown quickly started reaching out to their vendors.
“The hotel we had our booking at reached out to us and said they had to use our rooms for first responders and I think that’s when our brains clicked, and we thought a wedding is not a priority with these people getting back on their feet,” said Frye. “Their homes are destroyed: the power is out the water is out.
Brown, who is a partner at the bar, said "We kind of felt useless being here, when all this was going on with our family and community where we grew up."
Once they announced the fundraiser, Joanne McElwain, another partner at the bar said people and businesses started donating items that could be raffled off to raise more money.
McElwain said, "There's clothing companies, the New York Rangers, the New York Islanders, we have tickets coming."
If you missed the fundraiser, you could still donate to the organization the couple is sending the money to.
