NEW YORK (PIX11) – Monday is the deadline to file your federal tax return, but if you need more time, you can consider requesting an extension from the IRS.
You can request an extension through IRS Free File on the agency's website. It will connect you with a partner of the IRS who can help you file the extension request.
An extension gives taxpayers an additional six months, until Oct. 15, to file. In order to get an extension, though, you have to estimate your tax liability on the form and file it by Monday.
An extension to file your taxes is not an extension to pay. If you owe, you should pay your entire obligation or as much as you can by Monday to avoid penalties and interest.
