How to qualify for Section 8 in New York City

3 months ago 12

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- NYCHA has received a flood of applications for the Section 8 voucher waitlist, which remains open to apply for until Sunday. Here's what you need to be considered eligible for a voucher in New York City.

If your household spends nights at a shelter run by DHS and HRA, you would be eligible for a voucher. A family that stays at someone's home in the city and is recognized as homeless by New York City's Housing Preservation and Development Emergency Housing Services Bureau would also be eligible.

The city will also check to see if anyone is currently living in a building that needs renovation and is owned by the city. According to the HPD website, those households could get vouchers so they can find a permanent home where repairs are needed.

Also, buildings being renovated with financial assistance from the HPD would be eligible for a voucher if they are required to pay more than 30% of their gross income toward rent and utilities, much like those receiving Section 8.

What you should do after applying for Section 8 waitlist

Another set of households that are eligible are those part of HPD homeless and special needs programs. They must also have a rent burden of over 30% of their income. However, according to the website, "applications must be referred by HPD program staff or a designated program sponsor, and represent a household that has relocated from a homeless shelter within 24 months."

Being a U.S. citizen or noncitizen with eligible immigration status is also a requirement. According to the Section 8 website, families with at least one of those things may also qualify for pro-rated assistance. The website also features several bullet points with further details on immigration status.

To be eligible, you must also provide the social security numbers of all citizens in their household.

You would be deemed ineligible if you've ever been convicted of producing methamphetamines in federally-assisted housing before. Lifetime members of any state sex offender registration programs are also ineligible.

The income requirement ensures that Section 8 applicants must not exceed 50% AMI, meaning applicants must also ensure their household's annual gross income is not more than the following:

Family SizeIncome Limit
1$54,350
2$62,150
3$69,900
4$77,650
5$83,850
6$90,050
7$96,300
8$102,500
The 2023 Area Median Income (AMI) for the New York City region is $127,100 for a three-person family (100% AMI); Section 8 applicants must not exceed 50% AMI.

Applications will close on June 9 at 11:59 p.m. After applications close, 200,000 applicants will be randomly selected to join the program’s waitlist through a lottery.
