COVID cases are increasing sharply. A total of 752 COVID cases have been reported in India in the last 24 hours. While experts say there is no need to worry, as the new
JN.1 variant
keeps spreading across countries, it is imperative to keep kids and elderly people safe from the infection considering the way the infection has affected these populations earlier.
Due to the growing number of COVID cases and the onset of the winter season, it is important to pay more attention to the respiratory health in kids. Even mild symptoms should not be ignored and dealt with proper medical care.
Mask and social distancing are crucial
Emphasize regular handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Teach children to avoid touching their faces, especially the eyes, nose, and mouth. Encourage the use of masks in crowded or indoor settings, following local guidelines. Ensure masks fit well and are worn consistently, emphasizing the importance of this preventive measure. Teach children about the concept of social distancing and the importance of maintaining a safe distance from individuals outside their household, especially in public spaces. Demonstrate good hygiene practices, mask-wearing, and social distancing to set a positive example for children. Emphasize that these measures are not only for personal safety but also to protect others.
Keep kids away when the following situations exist
If anyone in your family or in the neighbourhood is infected with COVID, speak to your kids and gently ask them to remain indoors. Explain to them that their contribution plays a bigger role in preventing the spread of the infection. Encourage them to wash their hands and practice hygiene all the time.
If you notice signs like fever, cough, breathlessness/ shortness of breath, fatigue, myalgia, rhinorrhea, sore throat, diarrhea, loss of smell, loss of taste, etc. take medical help. Consult a doctor and start taking medicines. Isolate yourself in a room.
Be vigilant for symptoms of illness. If a child exhibits symptoms, consult a healthcare professional, and keep them home until receiving medical advice. Opt for outdoor activities when possible, and encourage safe playdates with a limited number of friends. Ensure shared toys and surfaces are regularly sanitized.
Encourage your kid to speak about COVID-19 infection and inform you if there is anyone with the infection. This will help take preventive measures at the earliest and stop the spread of the infection.
