Microsoft-backed OpenAI
’s popular generative AI-based chatbot, ChatGPT, is used for various purposes. However, there are some conversations with the chatbot that may be more private for users.
OpenAI
allows users to archive their chats and hide conversations from prying eyes. Whether you use
ChatGPT
on the web or your smartphone, it's simple to hide those AI chats.
The company allows users to easily hide their chats on ChatGPT’s
iPhone
apps app as well as its web client. However, this feature isn’t currently available for
Android
users and is soon expected to arrive on the platform. The company also took to social media platform X to confirm that the feature will soon become available for Android users as well.

Things to remember:
If you want to quickly hide specific chats, archiving the conversations is much more convenient than deleting the ChatGPT history. However, OpenAI doesn’t allow users to hide or archive multiple chats at once. So, if you have too many conversations that you want to hide, you'll have to do it one by one. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to keep your conversations with the chatbot private:
How to hide
ChatGPT chats
on the web
- Login with your OpenAI account on chat.openai.com
- Select the chat that you want to hide from the sidebar
- Click the ellipsis button next to it
- Choose Archive chat from the menu.
Doing this, the chat will disappear from the sidebar immediately. To recover it, you'll need to head to the ChatGPT settings menu and:
- Click on the OpenAI account name in the bottom-left corner of the page
- Select the Settings option in the menu
- Click on the Manage option next to Archived chats
- To view a hidden chat, click on the name of the chat.
- To unhide it, click the Unarchive conversation button (next to the Trash icon)
However, it's important to note that anyone can access your hidden ChatGPT conversations by heading to the same menu. Accounts are not locked behind a password.
How to hide ChatGPT chats on iPhone:
