NEW YORK (PIX11)—If you live and work in New York City, you may wonder whether your salary is enough to survive amid rising rent prices and inflation.
So, how much should you make as a salaried worker in New York City? Here's what you should know.
What's the weekly salary minimum? Who does it apply to?
Executive and administrative employees who are exempt from overtime in New York City must make at least $1,200 a week as of Jan. 1, according to the state Department of Labor. That equates to $62,400 per year.
Executive employees manage two or more people and can hire and fire employees. Administrative employees conduct work "directly related to management policies or general operations," which could mean anything from finance to advertising to human resources.
The previous minimum salary threshold was $1,125, according to DOL records.
What do you do if you're not being paid enough?
If you believe you fall under the definition of an executive or administrative employee who doesn't get overtime and you are not paid at least $1,200 a week, you can file a claim with the Department of Labor for unpaid wages. To view the form, click here.
How much should you make to live comfortably in NYC?
Despite the minimum salary threshold requirement now being $62,400, a recent study by SmartAsset found that you need to make at least $138,570 a year to live comfortably in New York City. If you're just looking to cover the cost of basic necessities, you still need to make at least $70,000, according to the study.
