NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- New Jersey residents still feel the effects of a 4.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the region on Friday and rattled New York City.
Over 31 aftershocks have occurred since the 4.8 earthquake struck near Califon, New Jersey, roughly 60 miles west of New York City, at 10:23 a.m., according to the United States Geological Survey.
At least two aftershocks were registered in New Jersey on Saturday, officials said. A 2.5-magnitude aftershock happened at 6:46 a.m., followed by a 2.6-magnitude aftershock at 9:29 a.m., according to the USGS.
Several minor aftershocks were also recorded on Friday in the same area throughout the day, according to the USGS. A 4.0-magnitude aftershock recorded at 6 p.m. shook New York City.
The USGS reported a chance for “at least one aftershock” from Friday morning’s earthquake within the next week. There's a 14% chance of an event measuring at a magnitude between 4 and above, the USGS forecasts.
Approximately 42 million people felt the earthquake, per USGS. It appears to have shaken areas as far south as the D.C. area and as far north as the New York-Canada border. The shaking lasted several seconds.
