Here's how Canadian universities offer steadfast support to Indian students, ensuring a safe and stable academic environment.
How Canadian Universities ensure stability for Indian Students amid challenges
Embarking on a global academic journey is a transformative experience, paving the way for diverse opportunities and successful career paths. Amongst the myriad study abroad options, Canada stands out as the preferred destination for Indian students. This preference is not without reason, as several compelling factors contribute to the widespread choice of Canada as an educational haven.
First and foremost, the allure of Canada lies in its highly-ranked universities and exceptional quality of life, making it an attractive prospect for Indian students seeking a world-class education.
Furthermore, the country's robust job market, characterised by a consistent demand for skilled labour, positions it as an ideal launchpad for students aspiring to commence their professional journeys.
The recently released Indian Students Mobility Report for 2023 also affirms Canada's steadfast position as the top choice for international study amongst Indian students.
Despite the growing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada soured after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed there was a "potential link" between the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar and the Indian government. Nijjar was killed in June outside a gurdwara in Canada by two unidentified assailants.
The impact of these issues on Indian students pursuing education in Canada remains minimal. As of now, there have been no reported concerns or challenges from students studying in the country.
To gain insights into the current situation on the ground, India Today reached out to Huron University, Canada, and others to get better insights on this.
"The prevailing tension had minimal effect on our day-to-day routines. When news of the situation surfaced, certain family members voiced their worries, enquiring whether we contemplated returning or heading to the States," said Muskan Guglani, a third-year student pursuing Business Management and Organisational Studies (BMOS) at Huron University.
"Despite their concerns, our reality remained unaffected. The dynamics between myself and my Canadian friends, as well as my other international acquaintances, showed no alteration," she added.
SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR INDIAN STUDENTS AT CANADIAN UNIVERSITIES
When questioned about misconceptions or stereotypes she may have encountered following the incident, she emphasised that they hadn't faced any such challenges.
"The overall environment is very safe for students. People are constantly offering support, expressing concern about how I am doing, and reaching out to ensure I feel settled amidst the political situation. While there was some initial uncertainty, once I grasped that the situation wasn't directly affecting us, I was calm and stable," said Muskan.
To address the needs of Indian students, the university has implemented various resources. These include provisions for visa support, academic assistance services, and the establishment of a dedicated team to offer mental health support to the students.
Throwing more light on the same, MoustafaEzz, Associate Vice President of Recruitment and International Relations of the university said, "Despite the political tensions, we have not observed any changes in the safety environment for students. Our campus remains a secure space for all international students, including those from India, with zero reported threats or complaints. Despite this stability, our proactive support system has been consistently engaged."
He further added, "Direct lines of communication to senior officials are established and students also have the privilege of meeting the president directly. Additionally, we maintain consistent contact with students' families and parents at all times. To ensure student well-being, we maintain a 24-hour hostel staff ready to assist."
"During the challenging situation, the University of Toronto released a press note emphasising its commitment to nurturing a conducive environment for its academic community. The note also pledged assistance to students and faculty grappling with stress, mental health challenges, and uncertainties related to immigration.
Highlighting its enduring partnerships in India, the university underscored its continuous collaborations across various academic domains, to offer enriching global learning opportunities to its students."
In addition, Dr. Rhonda L. Lenton, President and Vice-Chancellor of York University, has spoken to a media outlet, affirming that we maintain close communication with our Indian-origin international students to assure them that Canada and York University remain safe and inclusive spaces for their benefit. We have directed them to access the full range of support and services provided by the university, including student wellness, mental health resources, academic guidance, visa, immigration matters, and financial aid.
CONCERNS AND EXPERIENCES OF RECENT GRADUATES
A major source of concern for recent graduates from Canadian universities during the period of tension revolved around work permits.
Ajinkya Harugade, a recent graduate from Huron, shared his experience, stating, "Upon hearing the news, I initially felt some tension, having just graduated. However, within a week, I received my work permit without any hassle. Overall, the situation is quite normal. Those who applied for work permits are receiving them, and those who applied for visas are getting them. The political tension between the countries has not caused any significant disruptions."
Reflecting on how the situation impacted his life, he remarked, "Nothing has changed! It remains the same. Upon learning about the news, I made a habit of calling my parents every day. Connecting with my peers in India posed no challenges."
CURRENT SCENARIO
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's statement about a potential "tonal shift" in India's relations with Canada reflects a nuanced approach to balancing diplomatic priorities and values. He emphasised the desire to avoid conflict with India while underlining Canada's commitment to pursuing a trade deal and advancing the Indo-Pacific strategy.
Trudeau's acknowledgement of not wanting to engage in a dispute with India indicates an awareness of the importance of maintaining positive relations and fostering cooperation between the two nations. He reiterated the significance of working on a trade deal and advancing shared strategic initiatives, recognising their mutual benefits.
