MORRIS HEIGHTS, The Bronx (PIX11) – A shelter in the Bronx will soon provide lasting stability to people experiencing homelessness.
The BronxWorks shelter is set to be transformed into a building with 220 apartments of affordable housing and supportive housing for formerly homeless individuals and families, according to the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
“This project represents a turning point in how we tackle the housing and homelessness crisis,” said Acting HPD Commissioner Ahmed Tigani.
The location will be gutted and renovated to create 129 affordable housing units and 91 supportive housing units for formerly homeless New Yorkers. The building is also expected to include outdoor and recreation spaces as well as an early childhood education center.
Organizers at BronxWorks will continue to provide onsite support services for homeless individuals such as case management, behavioral and mental health support, financial management and connections to medical and community partners.
The renovation is part of New York City’s 15/15 Supportive Housing initiative originally announced by former Mayor Bill de Blasio. According to the plan, city officials intend to create 15,000 units of supportive housing over the next 15 years.
There were more than 158,000 homeless New Yorkers counted in 2024 by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
