NEW YORK (PIX11) – The state will step in and assist the NYPD on subways following a string of violent crimes on trains, Gov. Kathy Hochul is expected to announce Wednesday.

Random bag checks will be conducted underground to confiscate more weapons, Mayor Eric Adams said on Tuesday. High-tech metal detectors could also be installed before the end of the year, Hochul said.

Subway crime is up more than 13% compared to last year, according to data from the NYPD. MTA conductor Alton Scott was slashed in the neck last week while working, but was saved by a doctor on board.

On Tuesday, police said a man was attacked with a metal object inside the Grand Avenue station in Elmhurst, Queens.

The assaults have riders on high alert.
