Deep fake videos, or deepfakes, are one of the most dangerous technologies to spread

false information

. A number of well-known people, including industrialist Ratan Tata, actors Rashmika Mandanna and Katrina Kaif, were recently some of the victims of such videos. Now, a fake video of

cropped on social media suggesting that he invested in automated trading applications.

He has now refused any involvement with this and issued a caution that people should not believe such content.
Murthy, in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), noted that the deepfakes of him circulating on the internet are untrue and people should report such content to regulatory authorities.
Deepfakes are doctored digital media, including videos and images, that have been manipulated to impersonate someone to misrepresent facts in a convincing way.
Here’s what Murthy wrote

PUBLIC WARNING ISSUED IN RESPECT OF FAKE VIDEOS AND POSTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND INTERNET ABOUT ME
In recent months, there have been several fake news items propagated via social media apps and on various webpages available on internet claiming that I have endorsed or invested in automated trading applications named BTC AI Evex, British Bitcoin Profit, Bit Lyte Sync, Immediate Momentum, Capitalix Ventures etc. The news items appear on fraudulent websites that masquerade as popular newspaper websites and some of them even publish fake interviews using deepfake pictures and videos. I categorically deny any endorsement, relation or association with these applications or websites. I caution the public to not fall prey to the content of these malicious sites and to the products or services they are trying to sell to you. Please report any such instances to the concerned regulatory authorities.

Ratan Tata’s deepfake video
Recently, a video of Tata also made rounds on the internet. It showed Tata giving investment advice and was shared by an Instagram user named Sona Agarwal.
“A recommendation from Ratan Tata for everyone in India. This is your chance to exaggerate your investment right today risk-free with 100% guarantee," the caption of Agarwal's Instagram post read. Tata also called out a deep fake video of him.
New regulation to tackle deepfakes soon
Last month, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the government will soon come up with new regulations to tackle deepfakes. He also termed deepfakes as a new threat to democracy.
“We will start drafting regulation today itself, and within a short time we will have a new set of regulations for deepfakes ... this could be in the form of amending existing framework or bringing new rules, or new law," said Vaishnaw.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also raised concerns over deepfakes while highlighting the cons of AI technology. He said deepfakes “could have a devastating effect, and the world needs to think about it.”
