HEMPSTEAD, Long Island (PIX11) -- Beaches are busy during the summer with people having fun.
Lifeguards keep people safe and with the larger crowds there are more rescues.
The Town of Hempstead has announced due to the heat the four miles of beaches under its patrol will stay open an hour longer at least through Wednesday.
People are not permitted to swim when lifeguards are not on duty. Hempstead beaches will close at 7 p.m.
Most regional beaches, including in the city boroughs, close at 6 p.m.
Crews along Long Island shores have noticed rip currents and are also scanning for sharks.
On Monday, lifeguards with the town of Hempstead demonstrated training at Point Lookout. Rescues have been happening at a record pace this summer as Hempstead reported 250 saves this weekend.
Long Island had more than 700 lifeguard interactions.
