At its core, Helldivers 2 multiplayer mainly focuses on co-op missions.
If you find yourself missing squadmates, the game can match you with random players to fill out a 4-person team.
You will have two main options to play with randoms:
• Join an existing public game in progress
• Host your own public game for others to join
Both options make use of Helldivers 2's multiplayer and matchmaking tools. Once set up, you'll be able to take on missions with capable, if unpredictable, teammates.
How to drop into a public game in Helldivers 2
Follow these steps to find and join a random Helldivers 2 squad mid-mission:
• Open settings and enable Public Matchmaking
• Select a mission, then use Quick Play to search for open public games
• After a short search, you'll automatically join an available public game
• Wait 1-2 minutes as other players fill the remaining squad slots
• Once 4 players are present, the co-op mission will start
How to host a game for random allies in Helldivers 2
You can also take the initiative and host a game yourself:
• First, head to Settings to activate Public Matchmaking
• Choose your mission as usual, then make your game public
• Launch the mission and wait in the drop ship for randoms to join
• After 1-2 minutes, 3 other players should join the open game
• With 4 players readied up, your co-op squad will be complete!
The public matchmaking feature in Helldivers 2 ensures that you alaways have allies by your side in the game, even when your friends are offline. For this, you have to either join an existing game or open your own game to random teammates.
