5 months ago 8

CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn (PIX11) -- Spring is here, and that means it is time for the amusement parks at Coney Island to reopen for the season. Both Luna Park and Deno’s Wonder Wheel are in full swing.

It never gets old, but the Cyclone does. This year, it will be 97 years old, and this world-famous iconic wooden roller coaster in Coney Island continues to thrill Young and Old alike.

Leo Volkov, 7, has ridden it 23 times.

PIX11 News asked Volkov if he ever gets scared

“Maybe a little,” he replied.

Maya Kofa was celebrating her 17th birthday on the cyclone.

“I like the stomach drops,” she said.

It was opening day for both Deno’s Wonder Wheel and Luna Park.

There was the traditional blessing of the rides and christening of the cyclone with egg cream and free rides for the first 97 thrill seekers.

And so many other rides are so stomach-churning as well.

“The sun is shining, and our hearts are open,” Dennis Vourderis, Deno’s wonder wheel co-owner, told PIX11 News.

At Deno’s Wonder Wheel and on the boardwalk, the sun was shining, and everyone was dreaming of warmer spring days ahead and the crowds coming back in full force.

“I love all the rides, like the ups and downs, and I don’t get frostbite on the cyclone,” Luleit Dunkley, 12, told PIX11 News.

Luna Park and Deno’s Wonder Wheel are open on weekends and spring break until Memorial Day when the opening days are increased to seven days a week during the summer.
