AHMEDABAD:

Gujarat High Court

fined a

woman

Rs 25,000 Monday for creating a fake social media ID and

posting

sneakily taken pictures of her former hostel roommate in an attempt to have the latter’s engagement called off over three years ago.
Justice Nirzar Desai ordered the offender, who admittedly wanted to settle scores with her then roommate over an dispute, to deposit the

fine

with the legal aid society.

This was after she filed a plea in court, asking for the FIR be quashed on grounds that complainant’s family had forgiven her.
The harassment started after the victim got engaged in Oct 2020. Soon after the ceremony, an Instagram ID in the name of an unidentified male would post pictures of the college student in the hostel washroom. This went on for months before the girl confided in her family.
In March 2021, the victim’s father filed a police complaint, saying the culprit might be a classmate of his daughter since the pictures appeared to have been taken in the hostel washroom.

Cops slapped sections 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) of the IPC and 66(c) of the IT Act on the offender, but the case dragged on.
The accused approached the court recently, saying she and her

ex-roommate

had settled their dispute and that the latter’s family had no objection to the FIR against her being quashed. Justice Desai acceded to the plea, but said she should pay a fine for her crime nevertheless.
