Panaji: Goa University, which has a school of Sanskrit, philosophy and Indic studies on its campus, is finally set to offer a two-year full-time MA in Sanskrit programme from 2024-25. The course couldn’t be offered earlier as the school didn’t have suitable faculty.
The university will also offer innovative certificate programmes in ‘
Sanskrit studies
: Samskrtalokah’ and ‘aspects of
classical Indian theatre
’, both through the
online mode
.
The full-time
Sanskrit MA
is meant for “candidates interested in learning Sanskrit, and Indian culture”. GU has said that the programme is also for those “aspiring for careers in research, teaching, manuscriptology, Indian knowledge systems,
natural language processing
, translation, etc”. Eligibility is graduation in any discipline, and basic knowledge of Sanskrit is desirable.
The selection criteria for candidates will be the second round of the Goa University Admissions Ranking Test. Applications are open till June 13 and the test has tentatively been scheduled for June 20.
The certificate programme in Sanskrit studies will be offered online over six months and “aims at giving an overview of the Sanskrit language, along with an introduction to the various aspects of the Sanskrit language like grammar, literature, philosophy, culture, and communicative Sanskrit”.
“This course will benefit interested working professionals, Indic knowledge lovers, language enthusiasts, Ayurveda experts, and so on. Eligibility is graduation in any discipline. Commencement of the course is tentatively from June 2024,” GU said.
The certificate programme in ‘aspects of classical Indian theatre’ is based on Natyasastra and will incorporate ancient Indian and Buddhist texts on theatre and the indigenous community, apart from the folk and traditional theatre of Goa. This programme is tentatively expected to begin in June.
“Eminent scholars from the field will guide students throughout the programme. This is one of the rarest programmes offered across India. Eligibility is graduation in any discipline,” GU said in its notification.
