The government is planning to launch ‘

Digital India futureLABS

’ and establish the

India Semiconductor Research Centre

. According to IT minister

Rajeev Chandrasekhar

, the ‘

Digital India

futureLABS’ will enable partnerships between the government, startups and large enterprises in the electronics space.
“We will establish the India Semiconductor Research Centre shortly, which will serve as a hub for semiconductor innovation spanning all spectrums that will drive future systems,” Chandrasekhar said at the ‘IESA Vision Summit 2024'.

How futureLABS will help electronics manufacturing ecosystem
Highlighting the vision of the central government in the electronics manufacturing ecosystem, the minister said that the ‘Digital India futureLABS’ programme will include tier 1 suppliers and automotive industrial platforms that focus on designing and innovating systems for the future.

The ‘Digital India futureLABS’ initiative aims to establish a research and innovation framework, eventually helping boost India's electronics and IT sector. It will also focus on promoting leadership in standards, IPs, systems, and platforms as well as strengthening the domestic innovation ecosystem through collaboration, driving sustainable growth, and fostering technological progress.
“Over the past several years, the aim has been to catalyse innovation, support startups, and witness significant success, especially in the consumer internet space. We have witnessed a tremendous number of startups and unicorns, investments, and the creation of numerous opportunities, characterising an innovative ecosystem,” said the minister.

The programme will concentrate on sectors like automotive, mobility, compute, communication, strategic electronics and industrial IoT.
India global hub for electronic manufacturing
India has been working on several measures to develop the country as a global hub for electronics system design and manufacturing. The government has been working with consumer electronics companies like Apple and Google to set up manufacturing units in India. It has also imposed some import restrictions in a bid to boost laptop manufacturing in the country.
