BENGALURU: A week after the state government announced that the

education department

will take over

BBMP schools

and colleges to provide

quality education

, civic officials are preparing to hand over the

teaching responsibility

at their schools and PU colleges to the education department.
BBMP officials estimate that they may be able to save more than Rs 25 crore, the annual fund allotment for the temporary teaching staff at its schools and colleges.

According to

BBMP

sources, in the year 2022-23, the Palike spent about Rs 23.5 crore as honorarium expenses for the outsourced teachers and estimate the same to touch Rs 28 crore for the year 2023-24. The officials said that the state school education department will take over the responsibility of teaching and, hence, they needn't hire temporary teachers and the fund apportioned for the honorarium expenses could be saved.
"We have hired private agencies to provide teachers for BBMP schools and colleges. We used to spend more than Rs 25 crore on salary and other payouts to the temporary teachers. Now, the state education department has come forward to take over the responsibility of teaching in our schools and colleges. We need not pay money to the education department. So, BBMP will make a saving of over Rs 25 crore," said an officer. The education department will deploy the teachers in BBMP schools and PU colleges from the 2024-25 academic year.

As per civic body officials, in its last budget, the Palike had allotted Rs 152 crore for public education. This fund included over Rs 30 crore for salaries of permanent employees of the Palike's education department, including permanent teachers. The Palike will continue paying the salary for all its permanent staff, including the permanent teachers, presently working in its education department.
"We will continue to pay the teachers and other permanent staff recruited by BBMP until their retirement. But the fund of over Rs 25 crore, which was spent on contract teachers, will be saved from the next year," said an officer.
