(PIB) has warned smartphone users about a
fake SMS
circulating to be from
India Post
. In a recent post shared through the
PIB
Fact Check portal on X (formerly Twitter), the government agency has alerted users that this SMS includes a link which on clicking can steal their data.
In the X post, PIB said: “Have you also received an SMS from @IndiaPostOffice stating that your package has arrived at the warehouse, further asking you to update your address details within 48 hours to avoid the package being returned?! #PIBFactCheck, Beware! This message is #fake.”
Apart from this, the post also includes a photo that shows the SMS for users to be better prepared.
How this fake SMS can harm users
According to PIB, some users have been receiving a fake SMS impersonating to be sent from the India Post Office. The SMS reads:
“Your package has arrived at the warehouse and we attempted delivery twice but were unable to due to incomplete address information. Please update your address within 48 hours, otherwise the package will be returned. To update the address click on the link (indisposegvs.top/IN). After the update is complete, the package will be re-delivered within 24 hours.”
The government notes that the link provided in the SMS is dangerous. If users try to access the link, hackers may be able to access their personal information and may get into their systems to install viruses or malicious software or extract sensitive personal data, which can be misused.
“India Post never sends such messages asking for updating addresses for delivering articles. Do not click on such fraudulent links,” the government added in the thread.
