NEW YORK (PIX11) – Gov. Kathy Hochul is expected to make an announcement about safety in New York City subways Wednesday.
It comes following a spike in violence in the subways, including a 64-year-old Queens man who was kicked onto the tracks at Penn Station on Sunday.
Abu Khan told PIX11 News that he hit his head, causing bleeding to his brain. He also has leg and back injuries.
“[The suspect] go by the wall and kicked me in the back and I was thrown onto the track,” Khan said.
The suspect ran off after the unprovoked attack, according to authorities.
An MTA conductor, identified as Alton Scott, was also slashed in the neck while working last week. Dr. Patrick McRory, who was on the train, was able to save Scott's life.
Crime on the subways is up 13%, according to data from the NYPD.
Hochul said on Monday that she's been meeting with Mayor Eric Adams about safety in the subway. She added that the NYPD surge in police in the subway system has been successful.
"These are not new conversations," she said. "We're always in communication with the mayor, the MTA about passenger and employee safety."
Hochul previously said there will be cameras on all trains by the end of the year. She also wants them in every conductor booth.
