Gov. Hochul proposes major crackdown on organized retail theft

6 months ago 9

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Tuesday a plan to tackle large-scale retail theft in an effort to save small businesses.

Hochul already has the blueprints to get it done, she said. She called the thieves targeting small businesses "retail killers" for how they can decimate a downtown area.

Hochul said she'll use state police and make penalties for attacking retail workers the same as a first responder. Retail workers surrounded her while she made her announcement, some who've been on-site during smash-and-grab operations.

Hochul asked the legislature to fund the $45 million plan and get the federal government involved to stop the sale of stolen goods on online marketplaces.

She also proposed giving a tax break to small business owners who install security systems.
