NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) -- Gov. Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams and other city officials are expected to make a public safety announcement on Tuesday.
It comes a week after Hochul unveiled a five-point plan to make subways safer in response to a string of violent crimes across the city's transit system. MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber and NYC Police Commissioner Edward Caban will also attend the announcement.
In part of the five-point plan, 750 members of the National Guard were deployed to do random bag checks at select subway stations. A few days after the plan was enacted subway riders expressed that seeing armed National Guardsmen during their commute is too extreme.
On Friday, Hochul appeared on PIX11 Morning News to respond to the criticism, saying she stands by her decision.
Subway crime is up more than 13% compared to last year, according to data from the NYPD.
