Google, on Wednesday, announced that the Google Wallet is now available for all Android users in India. The digital Wallet can be used to carry important documents as well as act as a convenient place to store your flight tickets, movie tickets, etc. Google has partnered with 20 Indian brands, including PVR and INOX, Air India, Indigo, Flipkart, Pine Labs, Kochi Metro, Abhibus and many others for the launch and more partners are expected to join the company soon. However, ever since the news has been published online, many people are confused and are wondering if Google Wallet will replace Google Pay, which is one of the most popular UPI payment platforms in India. After all, a wallet is majorly used to carry money and make payments, right?

Will Google Wallet replace Google Pay?

Ram Papatla, GM and India Engineering Lead, Android at Google had explained during the launch event that the launch of Google Wallet won't affect Google Pay in any way and the platform will stay as it is. He added that Google Wallet is focusing on non-payment use-cases as of now and there are no plans to enable payments through the app in India presently. In other words, you can store your documents in Google Wallet but cannot make payments. For payments, Google Pay is the app that you can use. Hence, the launch of Google Wallet will have no effect on Google Pay and the app is not going anywhere.

"Google Wallet complements Google Pay, which will continue to serve the payments needs of users across India," Google India had said in a press release while announcing the launch of Google Wallet in India.

What is Google Wallet and how can it be used

As mentioned already, Google Wallet will help you store important documents so that you can access them any time you want. Think of it as your wallet but in digital form. From movie and event tickets to boarding passes and public transport transit tickets, Google Wallet can take care of several things so that you don't have to carry all the paperwork.

"As services become increasingly digitised, most of us now rely on our phones for quick access to our everyday essentials. While the Google Pay app remains your destination for all things payments, Google Wallet now brings a new level of convenience to the Android experience in India," a blog post by Google India read.

Additionally, when you are headed for a trip and upload your airline's boarding pass, you will get real-time information about any flight timing changes or boarding gate changes. For Pixel phone users, adding a boarding pass is even easier as all they need to do is take a screenshot and tap "Add to Google Wallet."

Air India is the first Indian airline that has made its passes available directly on Google Wallet.

In addition to this, after booking a movie ticket, IPL ticket, or train ticket, the event confirmation that is sent to a person’s Gmail account will automatically appear in their Google Wallet as well, if they have smart personalisation settings in Gmail turned on.

The app is available through PlayStore for all Android users and all you have to do is tap on Install after searching it on Google PlayStore.
