MADURAI: A gang attacked the office and
residence
of
Madurai city
deputy mayor T Nagarajan with weapons on Tuesday evening, damaging property. Two youths were arrested by the police in connection with the attack.
At around 6:30 pm on Tuesday, an armed gang suddenly attacked the office of the
deputy mayor
on Jaihindpuram Main Road and then his residence on Nethaji Street, Jaihindpuram.
No one was injured in the attack. However, the glass doors of the office, two two-wheelers, and the door of the residence were left damaged. “The gang with weapons tried to barge into my residence but my wife and I managed to lock the door and stay inside. They verbally abused me and damaged the door. Had I not been inside the house, I would have been assaulted. It was a murderous attack,” said Nagarajan, speaking to reporters.
Following the attack, CPI (M) cadres, led by Madurai district secretary, M Ganesan, held a protest in front of the Jaihindpuram police station and demanded for all those involved in the attack to be arrested and brought to justice. The Jaihindpuram police subsequently arrested two youths, Lokesh, 20, and Seeni Ismail, 20, who were from the same locality in connection with the attack and seized weapons such as knives and billhooks from them. Further investigation was on to trace other accused who may be involved.
The motive behind the attack was yet to be determined. Madurai MP Su Venkatesan also condemned the attack on the office and residence of the Madurai city deputy mayor and sought action against all anti-social elements behind the attack.
