Margao: In response to a fatal accident that claimed the life of Ashwet Gaonkar, 24, from Bandoli, Dabhal, local residents have taken matters into their own hands to improve safety conditions at the notorious Gandhinagar curve at Sanvordem.
The accident, which occurred when Gaonkar’s bike collided head-on with a truck, prompted immediate calls for action from the locality. After giving govt a week’s ultimatum to address the hazardous curve, residents, led by Congress workers Gautam Bhandari and Sanket Bhandari, initiated a community clean-up effort.
The group successfully cleared overgrown vegetation and wild bushes that had encroached upon nearly half the road width, significantly improving visibility for motorists. However, they were unable to flatten the dangerous slope due to concerns about potential landslides that could disrupt traffic flow.
“We have lost too many lives at this curve over the years,” said a local resident. “Our repeated requests to the authorities to eliminate this death trap have fallen on deaf ears.” Sanvordem residents expressed frustration with the panchayat’s inaction, questioning why basic maintenance equipment like bush cutters was not being utilised.
While the community’s efforts have temporarily improved conditions, residents continue to press for permanent solutions, including the complete elimination of the dangerous curve.
