Apple
announced the upcoming software updates as well as the new features that these versions will bring to the company products like iPhone, iPad,
Mac
and more at its annual developer conference,
WWDC 2024
. During the keynote of the event, the Cupertino-based tech giant also confirmed some of the gaming-related updates coming to its devices. Take a look at the gaming updates coming to
Apple devices
:
Game mode on iPhones with iOS 18
iPhones are finally getting a dedicated Game Mode that has been available on multiple Android models for years.
It's important to note that iPhones already come with the Game Center which is limited to cloud-synced saves and avatars. Meanwhile, the game mode available on Android phones can do other things like mute notifications and offer improved graphics and performance for mobile games.
Apple has announced that the Game Mode that is set to arrive on iPhones with
iOS 18
will offer some of the features found in Android phones. This mode will be able to slow down things like background activity to enable more processing demand for games.
Moreover, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models boast the more powerful A17 Pro chip. With these chipsets, the Game Mode will allow the iPhones to extract more power to run demanding games like the iOS version of Death Stranding.
This feature will also allow for more responsive connections with AirPods and wireless gaming controllers. A similar Gaming Mode is already available for Macs.
Personalized spatial audio for games
Gaming on Apple devices will become even more immersive with Personalized Spatial Audio that will put players in the middle of the action like never before. This feature uses the TrueDepth camera on iPhones to create a personal profile for Spatial Audio that delivers a listening experience tuned specifically for the user.
Apple has announced that Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking is set to arrive for AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max to deliver an improved sound for gaming, music and movies. The company also announced a new developer API that game makers will be able to use to bring this feature to their mobile titles.
Apple has even confirmed that the upcoming Need for Speed Mobile will be one of the first games to utilise this feature when it launches later this year.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows on Mac and iPad
While announcing the upcoming MacOS Sequoia, Apple brought
Ubisoft
’s Vice President and Executive Producer of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Marc-Alexis Côté to the stage. Côté announced that the upcoming Assassin’s Creed game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, will launch on Mac simultaneously with its console and PC release on November 15.
Additionally, the game will be available on iPad devices. However, there was no mention of an iPhone release of the title. Apple may announce the same at its next iPhone launch event later this year.
Ubisoft recently debuted Assassin’s Creed Mirage on both the iPhone 15 and M1 iPads. This suggests that the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows may also follow a similar path.
